Victory for Benoit Paire

Benoit Paire was the top seeded player in action at the Chennai Open on Tuesday with the Frenchman moving into the second round with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Flavio Copilla.

The Frenchman is seeded fifth and with the top four seeds receiving byes into the second round, Paire was the highest ranked player on view.

The 23-year-old is ranked 47th in the world, 48 places ahead of his opponent, but it was a tight match with Paire benefiting from his superior serve which saw him fire down six aces.

Paire will now play Dudi Sela of Israel who beat American qualifier Rajeev Ram 6-4 6-1.

Seventh seed Yen-Hsun Lu's tournament is over after he was beaten 6-4 3-6 6-4 by German Matthias Bachinger.

Bachinger served up seven double faults as well as six aces but he created more break-point opportunities and took advantage to edge through in two hours and eight minutes to set up a meeting with Roberto Bautista Agut.

The Spaniard prevailed 7-6 (8/6) 6-2 over Blaz Kavcic in two hours 14 minutes.

Another lengthy match saw qualifier Prakash Amritraj make a nonsense of the rankings when he beat Guillaume Rufin 6-7 (7/4) 6-2 6-3.

The Indian player is ranked 551 but he was far more consistent than his world-ranked 92 opponent, Amritraj serving nine aces on his way to victory in two hours 23 minutes.

His fellow Indian Somdev Dewarman also progressed with a 6-3 6-3 win over Jan Hajek.

Qualifier Cedric-Marcel Stebe beat Igor Sisling 6-4 6-4 and Sergiy Stakhovsky enjoyed a 7-6 (8/6) 7-6 (7/5) victory over Ruben Bemelmans.
