Serena Williams will be fit to play in the Brisbane International later this month, according to tournament officials.

Serena Williams: Should be fit to play in Brisbane

Williams had minor surgery on both big toes last week and subsequently withdrew from a scheduled exhibition match in Thailand on December 29.

With the Brisbane tournament starting the next day, the American's participation in the WTA's season-opener had been called into question.

However, having spoken to Williams' agent, tournament director Cameron Pearson said on Thursday that he expected the world number three to play.

"She'll be fit and ready for Brisbane," Pearson told AAP.

"She just needed a little bit more time than what the Thailand exhibition match gave her to be ready.

"I guess it's a bit of a compliment that she wants to tailor her preparation (for the Australian Open) around playing Brisbane."

The Brisbane International is due to feature eight of the world's top 10 players, including world number one Victoria Azarenka.
