Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova overcame fellow Czech Lucie Safarova to power through to the semi-finals of the New Haven Open at Yale.

Petra Kvitova enjoys her victory.

Number two seed Kvitova was a resounding 6-3 6-3 winner against her compatriot and will face French Open runner-up Sara Errani of Italy for a place in the final.

Errani, seeded fourth, came through 6-4 6-2 against French fifth seed Marion Bartoli.

The opposite semi-final will be contested by Caroline Wozniacki, who is seeking to win the tournament for a fifth year in a row, and Maria Kirilenko.

Both dropped just three games on their way past quarter-final opponents, with Danish third seed Wozniacki having it easy against off-form Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova as she won 6-2 6-1 and Russian seventh seed Kirilenko rolling to a 6-1 6-2 success against Belarusian qualifier Olga Govortsova.

Ahead of the US Open, which starts in New York on Monday, there was some cause for concern for Wozniacki who required strapping on her right knee after feeling pain early in the second set.
