Wawrinka and Youzhny beaten

Stanislas Wawrinka and Mikhail Youzhny suffered surprise exits in the second round of the Swiss Open in Gstaad.

Stanislas Wawrinka: Lost to Paul-Henri Mathieu

Wawrinka, the third seed and home favourite, went down to a hard-fought 7-6 (7/3) 7-6 (10/8) defeat at the hands of world number 172 Paul-Henri Mathieu, who is on the comeback from a knee injury.

Fourth-seeded Russian Youzhny, meanwhile, suffered a 4-6 6-2 6-4 loss against Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci.

Ernests Gulbis also reached the quarter-finals - where he will face off against Mathieu - following a 5-7 7-6 (7/3) 6-4 victory over Benoit Paire, while fifth-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez defeated Jan Hajek 6-7 (3/7) 6-1 6-4.

In first-round action, seventh seed Santiago Giraldo of Colombia defeated Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland 6-2 6-2.
