The Swiss, who was ranked second seed in the tournament, saw off the Spaniard 6-3 1-6 6-2 in one hour and 42 minutes in what was the ninth all-top 10 final of the season.

The final, which was Federer's fourth in a row, followed the form books as the 17-time Grand Slam champion continued his dominance over Ferrer, who he was now beaten in all 16 of their meetings in what was billed as "the battle of the 30-somethings".

The victory for Federer was his 80th singles title.

"It feels great," Federer said in an on-court interview with ESPN's Brad Gilbert. "I really enjoy playing here. I've played some really good tennis here over the years, so it's really nice to come back and win it again.

"I thought the final was good. The whole tournament was really good for me. I've been beating Top 10 (players) along the way and just enjoying myself out on court, playing some positive tennis, so it's really encouraging."
