Petra Kvitova saved 11 break points as she battled past Venus Williams to reach the final of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
The world number 11 needed two hours and 24 minutes to see off a resurgent Williams 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7/2) and reach her third tour final of the season.
The 33-year-old Williams served nine aces and broke Kvitova twice but it was not enough to earn her a place in the final.
Kvitova will face Germany's Angelique Kerber in the final after the world number nine beat Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki 6-4 7-6 (7/5).
Kerber took advantage of three of her nine break point opportunities to seal victory in one hour 40 minutes.
