Federer wins 6-1 7-6 (7/1) 6-4
Third set: Soderling 4 Federer 6
Soderling goes wide with a backhand off a second serve to give Federer a good start but then Federer nets, drawing a collective gasp from the crowd. A first serve draws an error on the return from the Swede, but Federer then goes long himself. 30-30. Federer then misses an easy drive volley to fall break point down! Soderling frames a shot deep by his baseline as chance disappears. It's match point when Federer drags Soderling around and then comes forward to hit a volley. History is assured when Soderlign nets on the return and Federer sinks to his knees. He's become only the sixth man in history to win all four Grand Slam tournaments.
Third set: Soderling 4 Federer 5
One fine shot, almost on the half volley, aside, that's not a great game from Federer. Soderling holds to 30 and Federer is left to serve for his place in history. Can he do it? We are about to find out. He has to be nervous.
Third set: Soderling 3 Federer 5
Soderling fights back from 30-0 down with a fine winner followed by a shot off the frame from his foe. That simply produces a forehand winner right on the line - majestic - and a fine kick serve finishes the game off.
Third set: Soderling 3 Federer 4
Federer wins the first point, but Soderling does to re-focus and hold to 30. He can't afford to lose serve again now. And, of course, he needs a break in the one of the next two Federer service games. The rain has gone away again, by the way.
Third set: Soderling 2 Federer 4
Federer falls 0-15 down but then comes up with a superb forehand when Soderling looks set to win the second point too. From there he finds the first serves again - two more aces seeing him hold to 15.
Third set: Soderling 2 Federer 3
A solid hold to 15 for Soderling. Since the first set he's certainly competed with Federer, but the Swiss has just played better. Simple as that. Federer is three holds from victory but looked a little shaky in his last service game. He's got the new balls in his hands now...
Third set: Soderling 1 Federer 3
A double fault is followed by an ace from Federer but then a backhand off the frame takes the score to a shaky-looking 30-30. Then a wild forehand long, which should have been an easy winner, brings up Soderling's first break point of the match. The following point also brings a half-court forehand but this one is put away to slam the door on the Swede. From deuce he holds to lead 3-1. Is that Soderling's last chance gone?
Third set: Soderling 1 Federer 2
Not the best game that from Federer, but he still lead by a break. Soderling is strong on serve there, holding to 15 with ease. The rain had eased off but it's now back and the brollies are up again.
Third set: Soderling 0 Federer 2
A 13th ace in that game helps Federer hold, which he does when Soderling disappointingly nets. I can almost hear the history books being re-written now.
Third set: Soderling 0 Federer 1
The longest rally of the match at 15-15 sees Federer throw in another drop shot. This one Soderling gets to and he then puts away a superb over-the-shoulder smash from the attempted lob that follows. However, Federer responds with an exellent pass and then a double fault hands him break point. A mis-hit return for the Swiss is returned wide by Soderling and Federer leads by two sets and a break. Can Soderling really fight back from here?
Second set: Soderling 6 Federer 7
Two aces start the breaker before Federer stretches Soderling wide on the forehand and secures the first mini-break. Two more aces leave the Swede in trouble and when he goes wide with a backhand it's a deep hole he's in at 1-5 as they change ends. There's no stopping Federer and he seals a two-set lead with a fourth ace from four service points! Awesome stuff.
Second set: Soderling 6 Federer 6
A glorious backhand down the line gets Federer off to a flier. Three big forehands turn things around for Soderling to 40-15. However, an error from the same wing followed by a superb pass from Federer brings up the first deuce. A third game point then goes begging after Federer comes up with another fine pass. A big serve followed by a long forehand from Federer secures the tie-break.
Second set: Soderling 5 Federer 6
No problems for Fed there. He responds with a love game of his own, one which includes two aces. That's him into a tie-break at least. Now he can have a real go at Soderling's serve. The rain continues to fall.
Second set: Soderling 5 Federer 5
Solid stuff on serve from the underdog and a rare love hold. He's certainly improved in this set. Can he snatch it and level up?
Second set: Soderling 4 Federer 5
Federer needs two chances to put away the first point at the net but plays more impressive stuff to hold to 15. Two more forehand winners leave Soderling serving to stay in the set.
Second set: Soderling 4 Federer 4
A chance for Federer at 15-30 but his attempted forehand pass finds the net. Soderling does well to hold, ending the game with one of the forehand winners which he has been producing all week. The rain is falling harder now with the umpire looking around for the tournament referee. Play will continue though.
Second set: Soderling 3 Federer 4
Another terrific drop shot from Federer baffles Soderling - he's got nowhere near any of them yet. It's the highlight of an easy game for Federer, who holds to 15.
Second set: Soderling 3 Federer 3
A couple of awful errors - a double fault and a woefully long smash - see Soderling fall 15-30 behind. However, he comes to the net twice to put away solid volleys to clinch the game. There's light rain in the air with a few umbrellas up now around the court.
Second set: Soderling 2 Federer 3
Thankfully the disruption did not effect Federer in that service game. There were more solid first serves in that game and depsite an unusal backhand error he manages to hold for a 3-2 lead. He sits down to chants of 'Roger, Roger' from the crowd.
Second set: Soderling 2 Federer 2
Soderling holds to love - that first serve is certainly going in more now - after that brief delay. Has it upset Federer's rhythm? He was playing so well.
Break in play: Extraordinary scenes as a spectator invades the court and manages to lay his hands on Federer. He appeared to be dangling a flag over him. He's eventually grabbed an dragged away but how he got so close to the players is anyone's guess. That appears to have startled Federer and Soderling checks he is OK before continuing.
Second set: Soderling 1 Federer 2
Federer falls 0-15 down but has not need to panic. He simply pulls out the drop shot again to square things up and then finishes the game off with his fifth ace of the day.
Second set: Soderling 1 Federer 1
Soderling's most convincing game so far sees him hold to 15. He got more first serves in during that game - his percentage needs to rise as it was only 54 in the first set.
Second set: Soderling 0 Federer 1
Federer starts with a double fault but recovers with some impressive first serves, including an ace, to secure an easy hold. That double was just the second point Federer has dropped in four service games so far today.
First set: Soderling 1 Federer 6
A fine low volley from Soderling is his best shot of the match so far but it's only brief respite for the 23rd seed. Another powerful forehand from Federer can be retrieved and brings up two set points. A big first serve saves the first but a backhand pass on the next give Federer the first set in just 23 minutes. A dream start for Federer, reminiscent of the way he began last year's US Open final against Andy Murray.
First set: Soderling 1 Federer 5
Another flawless game for the Fed Express. The forehand is looking in tip-top shape so far and that shot helps him hold to love for the second time. 5-1.
First set: Soderling 1 Federer 4
Soderling again finds early trouble on his serve. But down 15-30 he recovers, his first ace helping get on the scoreboard. That will be a big relief for the Swede but he has it all to do in this set.
First set: Soderling 0 Federer 4
Another ace kicks off game four. Soderling errors aren't helping his cause and as he struggles to keep the ball in court, Federer holds to 15.
First set: Soderling 0 Federer 3
Another brilliant drop shot - from well behind the baseline - takes Federer to 0-30 again. When Soderling dumps a forehand into the net it's two more break points. A big serve saves one but the second sees Federer send a forehand just in. Soderling had expected the ball to drop out - his fist was already clenched in celebration of the point - but the ball was definitely in. A double break for Fed!
First set: Soderling 0 Federer 2
Federer bangs down the first ace and he finishes the game with a fine drop shot. The first serve was firing there and the Swiss could not have asked for a better start than this.
First set: Soderling 0 Federer 1
Federer moves to 0-30 but then two errors peg things back. Soderling goes long to bring up break point and a double fault hands Federer the perfect start. That draws a big cheer from the crowd.
Ready to go: There are plenty of clouds in the air as Soderling steps up to open the match. All the pressure is on Federer - if he doesn't win today, can he ever win at Roland Garros? Let's hope for a good match.
Player arrival: The weather hasn't been the greatest in Paris this weekend but we are set for a prompt start. The players make their way on to Court Philippe Chatrier. Not surprisingly, it's Federer who receives the greatest ovation - it may be difficult to find a Soderling fan among the 15,000 spectators today, such is Federer's popularity. It's fair to say most tennis fans are desperate to see Federer make history today.
Pre-match: It's worth noting the head-to-head record between these two - and it makes good reading for Federer. He's won all nine of their previous clashes, losing just one set in the process. Two of those matches were on clay - the last just a few weeks ago in Madrid saw Federer win 6-1 7-5.
Pre-match: Soderling, of course, will have something to say about federer's history exploits. He's been sensational over the past fortnight. This is his first Grand Slam final - in fact prior to this event he had never been beyond even the third round of a Grand Slam. His serve has been awesome - and Federer struggled against Jua Martin Del Potro's big delivery in the semis - but he's been very effective from the baseline, a surprise given his best results in the past have come on the slicker indoor courts. Since beatng Nadal, he's thrashed Nikolay Davydenko and survived a five-set battle with Fernando Gonzalez in the semis, coming from 4-1 down in the decider. In the form of his life, he should certainly not be written off.
Pre-match: So here we are again. For the fourth year in a row,Roger Federer stands on the brink of the career Grand Slam here at the French Open. This time, of course, there's no Rafael Nadal in his way. Instead he's up against the man who stunned Nadal seven days ago - Sweden's Robin Soderling. As a result Federer starts a hot favourite to join Fred Perry, Don Budge, Rod Laver, Roy Emerson and Andre Agassi as the only men to win all four majors - the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Victory will also see him equal Pete Sampras' all-time record of 14 Grand Slam titles.
