Safina will always struggle to shake off the tag of 'Marat Safin's sister', but she has at least shown in recent weeks that she may be capable of doing so. Won the German Open in Berlin - the biggest victory of her career so far - in the run-up to this event, sending Justine Henin into retirement and also beating Serena Williams and Elena Dementieva. On that form, she has to be considered a title contender here. Could prove to be a value selection, although will need to shake off a slight back problem.
