When Williams won here in 2002 it was the beginning of her 'Serena Slam'. Less than a year later and she was the holder of all four major titles. Injuries then took their toll but she has stormed back to form in the past 18 months and following Justine Henin's retirement announcement was installed as the bookies' favourite to lift the trophy. However, clay has never been Serena's favourite surface and it was no surprise to see her 18-match winning streak snapped upon arrival on the red stuff in Berlin. Her competitive nature will always hold her in good stead but she looks a short price in a high-class field, especially given she suffered a back injury in Rome.
