A former world junior champion, Kuznetsova learnt much from tour mentor and one-time doubles partner Martina Navratilova. She used that experience to win the US Open in 2004 and went close to repeating that feat last year only to run into Justine Henin in the final. Indeed 2007 was a fine season for Kuznetsova and her consistency in reaching the latter stages of events lifted her up to second in the WTA rankings. You still feel she lacks something when meeting her top-10 peers and for that reason looks likely to come unstuck in week two in Melbourne.
