VERDICT

Gonzalez was the story of this tournament 12 months ago when a series of spectaular displays propelled him into the final where he came up short against Roger Federer. Owner of possibly the biggest forehand on the tour, the Chilean has added more consistency to his game over the past couple of years but 2007 still saw him suffer several unexpected defeats to lower-ranked opponents. His go-for-broke game is prone to collapse and with all eyes on him in Melbourne, he'll do very well to make a similar impact to last year.
