VERDICT

The man they all have to beat in Melbourne. Federer has won the title here on three occasions, his only defeat in the past four years coming at the hands of Marat Safin in a memorable semi-final back in 2005. Lost nine matches in 2007 - a poor season by his incredible standards - but got up for all the big events and won three Grand Slams plus the season-ending Masters Cup. Worryingly had to withdraw from the Kooyong warm-up event with a virus, but if he's fully fit it will take a terrific performance from someone to deny him the trophy.
