Aravane Rezai won the Tournament of Champions in Bali after fellow Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli retired due to a thigh injury during the final.
Bartoli was serving for the set at 5-4 but was broken by Rezai and the top seed then failed to convert a break-point at 5-5.
Rezai then battled to win the first set 7-5 but Bartoli chose to end the encounter as her left thigh injury continued to cause her pain.
The victory was Rezai's second title of her career after her triumph on the clay in Strasbourg in May.
She said: "It's a great feeling to be here in the final. I'm very sorry for Marion that this happened. I'd prefer to win in a different way, but it's tennis, a lot of different things happen."
Bartoli, in tears as she quit, added: "I'm crying right now, but I'm so happy to be here.
"I'd like to congratulate Aravane on the wonderful week she had. She played some great tennis.
"My leg was hurting and I tried my best to carry on, but it was too much pain. I'm sorry I wasn't able to finish today."
