VERDICT

After so many years as the nearly woman of tennis, the popular French star finally broke through to the top echelon of the game in 2006 by winning her first two Grand Slam titles, including the Melbourne crown. However, her triumph here wasn't ideal with three of her opponents retiring, including those in the semis and final. She will look to enjoy a more creditable success this year, but has revealed concern about her form in the run-up to the event - not a great sign coming from a player whose mental side of the game hasn't always been up to scratch.
