Roddick has defied the critics who had suggested he was a spent force less than a year ago. The catalyst for his recent recovery has been new coach Jimmy Connors. The US legend has given the big-serving Roddick new-found confidence as was shown in the second half of last season when he reached the final of the US Open and gave Roger Federer a real match. The likely absence of Connors in Melbourne - his mother has just died - will be looked upon as a setback to Roddick's title hopes though.
