VERDICT

He may not have won the event, but Baghdatis was the story of the 2006 Australian Open. Roared on by fanatical support, the Cypriot recorded wins over Andy Roddick, Ivan Ljubicic and David Nalbandian before pushing Roger Federer hard for a set and a half in the final. He went on to reach the Wimbledon semis and won his maiden ATP title, in Beijing, later in the year. Hasn't made the best of starts to this campaign and may feel the pressure of defending his ranking points this time around.
