VERDICT

Despite long-running back problems, the big-serving Croat managed to reach 13 quarter-finals on the ATP Tour in 2006, a statistic which included the French Open and Wimbledon. He finished the year strongly, winning in St Petersburg and only just missing out on a place in the Masters Cup. Always a danger with his penetrating serve, Ancic usually comes up short on a hardcourt as a relatively poor record in Melbourne shows. Expect that to be the case again this time around.
