Andy Roddick, the number nine
seed, continued his rapid rise up the ATP rankings with a 6-3 6-3 win over
number 10 seed Sjeng Schalken to capture the Legg Mason Tennis Classic.
The victory for the 18-year-old was his third ATP title of the year and marked
his first on a hardcourt following wins on clay in Atlanta and Houston.
The final was delayed by rain but Roddick made up for lost time by serving an
ace with the opening serve of the match.
The United States youngster broke the Dutchman twice in the first set to win it
6-3.
The second set was held up by rain when Schalken was trailing 3-4 and when play
resumed he immediately dropped his serve and Roddick then served out to claim
the title.
