Juan Carlos Ferrero banished the ghosts of his defeat in last year's Open Seat Godo final to beat Carlos Moya in an all-Spanish thriller.
In a match packed with a plethora of twists and turns, Ferrero outlasted Moya to win 4-6 7-5 6-3 3-6 7-5 and pick up his third title of the year.
Ferrero had looked dead and buried at 3-1 down in the last set, but the young Spaniard came through the titanic four-hour marathon with a break-back and further break.
The 21-year-old now joins Andre Agassi and Gustavo Kuerten on three titles won so far this year and should be viewed as a definite contender at Roland Garros next month.
This was a title he desperately wanted to win on home soil having suffered the disappointment of losing last year's final to Russian Marat Safin.
This final, however, was a stark contrast to last year's match which saw Ferrero given a tennis lesson and blasted off the court in three straight sets.
Moya, who is now getting back to somewhere near the form which saw him achieve world number one status in 1998, was competing in his first final of the year and was unlucky not to cap it with a win.
But he was up against a determined opponent in Ferrero, who continues to sweep all before him on clay.
