Nikolay Davydenko clinched his second Masters Series title on Sunday after thrashing Rafael Nadal in Miami.
Davydenko, who had lost both previous meetings with the Spaniard, proved too good on this occasion, winning 6-4 6-2 in one hour and 22 minutes.
The Russian's previous Masters Series title came in Paris in 2006.
The title triumph will be a huge fillip to Davydenko, whose reputation has been tarnished by allegations of match-fixing at a tournament in Poland last August.
A long-running ATP investigation is continuing but Davydenko will at least create positive headlines for a few days after a wonderful performance against Nadal.
The 26-year-old, who was born in Ukraine, had to survive a match point in his second-round clash against Latvian teenager Ernests Gulbis and his mindset seemed to change following that scare.
Playing with an aggressive approach accounted for Andy Roddick in the semi-finals and Davydenko employed a similar gameplan against Nadal.
He broke twice in each set to deny the world number two his first title since Stuttgart last July.
"He played unbelievable tennis," admitted Nadal afterwards.
Even Davydenko seemed shocked to be holding the trophy.
"It is surprising for me to stand here, it is crazy," he said, before revealing he had played the entire tournament with just one racket.
"I only have one racket and I played three sets in virtually every match. Thankfully I didn't break a string."
