Novak Djokovic stunned defending champion and world number one Roger Federer 7-6 (7-2) 2-6 7-6 (7-2) to win the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Sunday.

Djokovic, who beat second seed Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals on Saturday and American Andy Roddick in the quarter-finals, landed his sixth career title and fourth this season to thwart Federer's attempt for his 50th career singles crown.

Federer, who won the 2004 and 2006 Rogers Cup in Toronto after missing the 2005 edition in Montreal through injury, also saw his 16-match winning streak ended.

Djokovic claimed an early break of the Federer serve in the first set to take a 3-0 lead, but Federer recovered to force a tiebreak after raining down seven aces compared to one from his Serbian opponent.

But world number four Djokovic used a 71% success rate on his second serve to claim the first set as Federer wasted six set points.

Federer responded in the second set and converted four of six breaks points to win the last four games of the set from 2-2 to level the tie.

Djokovic raced out to a 4-2 lead in the third set with an early break, but Federer battled back and again forced a tiebreak.

But, like the first set tiebreak, Djokovic raced out to an early lead and secured the title.

The victory was the first for Djokovic against Federer, who had won all four previous meetings, including hardcourt victories this season at the Australian Open and in Dubai.
