Dmitry Tursunov has claimed his first career title after beating Tomas Berdych in the final of the Kingfisher Airlines Tennis Open in Mumbai.
A little more than a week after his marathon win in the semi-finals of the Davis Cup, Tursunov dug deep to win 6-3 4-6 7-6 (7-5).
The final of this inaugural US $380,000 hardcourt event was delayed a day after rain wiped out play on Sunday.
That extra day of rest might have been just the tonic for Tursunov, who endured four three-set matches en route to the title, including Saturday's 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-1 semi-final victory over top seed Tommy Robredo of Spain.
Those tough matches came right on the heels of an epic win against Andy Roddick in Russia's Davis Cup match-up with the United States eight days ago, when the 23-year-old sealed his nation's victory by capturing the decisive fifth set, 17-15.
The fourth-seeded Tursunov had reached just one previous final, losing to German Tommy Haas in Los Angeles in July.
Pocketing US$52,000 for the win, Tursunov avenged a loss to Berdych in another five-set match in the third round of the US Open.
The third seed from the Czech Republic, Berdych was playing in his fifth career final and denied his third title. The 21-year-old also lost to Roger Federer in the final on grass at Halle, Germany, earlier this season.
