Marcos Baghdatis bounced back in a big way from his early exit at the US Open.
The third seed from Cyprus, Baghdatis cruised past Mario Ancic of Croatia with a 6-4 6-0 victory in the final of the China Open on Sunday.
It was the first career ATP title for Baghdatis, who has enjoyed a breakthrough season.
"It's my first title," said Baghdatis, who became the first Cypriot in tour history to win an ATP tournament.
"It's a great moment and I'm really happy about that, especially playing a great match today."
Currently ninth in the ATP rankings, the 21-year-old has rebounded nicely from a second-round upset loss to Andre Agassi at the US Open.
Despite battling cramps and a raucous crowd, Baghdatis lasted five sets before ultimately falling to Agassi.
But Baghdatis dominated in this US$475,000 hardcourt event, winning 10 of his last 11 sets.
In doing so, he improved his chances of receiving a berth in the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup at Shanghai.
"Of course I would love to come back to China for the Masters Cup in Shanghai," he said.
"That is a dream for me. I have made progress this week but I need to stay calm and focused in order to win matches and earn points for Shanghai. I really want to go but don't want to put too much pressure on myself."
Baghdatis needed just one hour, 12 minutes to complete his victory Sunday, winning the last eight games.
"I didn't let him play," Baghdatis said. "I made a lot of returns and put pressure on him. It was one of my best matches."
"Marcos is an unbelievable player, a top-10 player," added Ancic, who lost for just the third time in his last 22 matches. "In the second set, he stepped up."
The 22-year-old Ancic was playing in his first tournament since Wimbledon due to back and knee injuries.
The Croat persevered through a trio of three-set matches to make his fourth finals appearance this season.
"This was an unbelievable week for me," Ancic said. "Every match for me was like a final."
