The title drought for Austria's Jurgen Melzer is over.
Melzer captured his first career ATP title with a 6-1 7-5 victory over Filippo Volandri in the final of the BCR Open on Sunday.
An unseeded player, Melzer had been winless in three previous final appearances before breaking through in this US$382,000 claycourt tournament.
"To win your first title is so awesome, it's an unbelievable feeling," Melzer said.
"It is what you have been working for your entire tennis life."
Holding his serve throughout the match, Melzer fired seven aces in beating the Italian Volandri in their first meeting.
"To win against Filippo today, I focused on putting a lot of pressure on him," Melzer said.
"He's one of the best baseliners on the tour, and it didn't make sense for me to try to play him from the back. I tried to come in as much as possible, to risk a little more than usual."
Volandri, who had two breaks of serve in the first set, fell to 1-6 in career finals.
"It was a really difficult match for me because he's left-handed and he gives me a lot of problems, especially on my serve," Volandri said.
"I knew that already before the match but I didn't expect he was going to be playing so good."
