Unseeded Brazilian Ricardo Mello captured his first ATP Tour title when
overcoming top seed Vincent Spadea in straight sets to win the Millennium
International at Delray Beach in Florida.
After winning a first-set tie-breaker, Mello scored an early break in the
second set and cruised to a 7-6 (7/2) 6-3 victory.
A 23-year-old left-hander, Mello also upset third seed Mario Ancic of Croatia
by the same score in the semi-finals.
It continued a trend in the hardcourt tournament, which saw five of the eight
seeds lose their first-round matches.
The fragmented draw benefited Mello, who was playing in his first career
final.
Spadea, 30, was in search of his second career title. He won his only career
crown earlier this year at Scottsdale.
Spadea beat three straight fellow Americans to reach the final.
