Argentina's Guillermo Coria capped a memorable week with a
decisive victory over Germany's Rainer Schuettler in the final of the Tennis
Masters of Monte Carlo.
The third-seeded Coria lost only six games in routing the fourth-seeded
Schuettler 6-2 6-1 6-3 to claim his second Masters Series title.
Coria, who also won in Hamburg last year, claimed his 26th straight match win
on clay and spoiled Schuettler's 28th birthday.
It was Coria's 12th overall ATP tour title.
The 22-year-old become the first Argentinian to win in Monte Carlo since his
former coach, Alberto Mancini, in 1989.
Coria appeared in his second straight ATP Masters Series finale.
He reached the final last week against Andy Roddick at the NASDAQ-100 Open in
Miami, but was forced to retire in the fourth set with a back injury.
Coria's winning streak on clay is the longest since Thomas Muster won 40 in a
row on the surface in 1995.
During the streak, he has lost only four of 59 sets, which covers five
tournaments, beginning with his Masters Series title in Hamburg last year.
Schuettler, who was appearing in his first Masters Series final, was seeking
his fifth career title and first on clay.
He beat three former world number one players - Gustavo Kuerten, Lleyton
Hewitt and Carlos Moya - to reach the final.
Schuettler was trying to become the first German to win in Monte Carlo since
Baron Gottfried Von Cramm won back-to-back titles in 1937-38.
Coria's victory moved him into third place in the ATP Champions Race, behind
Roger Federer and Andy Roddick.
