Tim Henman claimed his hard work in training had finally paid dividends after
a fine straight-sets victory over home favourite Roger Federer to in the final
of the Davidoff Swiss Indoor event in Basel.
Henman, who won the title three years ago, took his second tournament victory
of the year with a 6-3 6-4 6-2 triumph over Swiss star Federer.
The Oxford-based player was delighted to add to the Copenhagen title he won in
February after so many disappointments.
"(Coach) Larry Stefanki and I have been working hard over the past few months
and at times it's been frustrating not to see the fruits of our labour on the
match court," he told his personal website, www.timhenman.org.
"However, this week all that hard work has paid off and the end result is
plain to see.
"I'm very pleased to have won my second title of the year, but more
importantly I'm delighted with the way I've played all week.
"My serve has felt great all week and it makes such a huge difference to my
overall game. I mixed it up well and used both the body serve and the kick serve
to great effect."
Federer, who ended Pete Sampras' reign at Wimbledon in July, suffered the
disappointment of losing before his own supporters and fell further behind
Henman in the Champions Race.
Just a single break in the sixth game was all that the British number one
needed to take the first set, and a poor fourth service game by Federer turned
events Henman's way in the second set.
The third set began with Federer holding serve, but Henman reeled off five
straight games before failing to take advantage of a first match-point when 5-1
up.
It was not long though before Henman secured his eighth career ATP title.
Today's win gives the 27-year-old British number one hope of reaching the
end-of-season Masters Cup in Sydney, although he still needs a good performance
in the final event of the year, the Masters Series in Paris, to qualify.
