Felix Mantilla of Spain conquered David Nalbandian
of Argentina 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 on Sunday to win his first ATP title in three years at
the International Championship of Sicily claycourt event.
Mantilla, who saved nine match points on Saturday to overcome compatriot and
third seed Albert Portas in the semi-final, collected his ninth career
tournament victory.
His last triumph came at the 1998 Samsung Open at Bournemouth.
Mantilla, who turned 27 last Sunday, avenged his two losses to Nalbandian this
year.
The teenager posted straight-sets victories over Mantilla in the quarter-finals
at Umag, Croatia and the opening round at Vina del Mar, Chile.
"He already beat me twice, so I knew how to play him," Mantilla said.
"His backhand is one of the best in the circuit, so I tried to vary the game.
Yesterday's win gave me a lot of confidence."
Despite getting past four Spaniards on his way to the championship match,
Mantilla proved to be one hurdle too many for the South American.
"Today, I was very tired mentally and physically," Nalbandian said.
"For the first set, I played well, but he played much better on important
points. My goal is to become better at the net and play better in those
critical points."
