American teenager Andy Roddick capped the best stretch of his short
professional career with his second straight tournament victory after beating
Hyung-Taik Lee of Korea in the final of the US Claycourt Championships in
Houston.
Roddick, who did not dropped a set in five matches in the tournament, extended
his winning streak to 10 with a 7-5 6-3 victory over the eighth-seeded Lee, who
became the first Korean to reach an ATP final.
Last week, the 18-year-old Roddick made the most of his first career claycourt
tournament, winning the Verizon Tennis Challenge in Atlanta.
With that title he became the first American teenager to win an ATP title
since 19-year-old Michael Chang did so at San Francisco in 1992.
"I can't believe it," said Roddick. "Hyung-Taik is a great player and he
had a great tournament.
"He gave me all I could handle today, it was just a couple of points here and
there. I was just telling myself 'hold serve, hold serve' and maybe you'll get
your chances.
"At five-all I told myself if he makes the first serve just return it and
make him play and if you get a second serve, then really try to attack it."
Looking ahead to the French Open which kicks off on May 28 at Roland Garros,
Roddick added: "I feel confident going in that I can battle.
"I just want to go in and play well and know someone is going to have to play
well to beat me."
Lee was satisfied with his tournament performance, saying: "When I first came
here I didn't think of getting to the final.
"However, I got into the final and even though I lost it I feel very good and
I'm happy because I feel that I'm improving and I know that there's a prosperous
future ahead of me."
