Juan Ignacio Chela took advantage of a second chance he was given in his semi-final to claim the Abierto Mexicano Telcel title.
The 27-year-old Argentine beat Spaniard Carlos Moya in straight sets 6-3 7-6 (7/2) to take his fourth career title.
Chela was trailing Agustin Calleri by one set and was 5-3 down in the second of their semi-final encounter when his compatriot pulled a muscle in his right thigh and was forced to retire after Chela had levelled at 5-5.
The number four seed fared much better against 30-year-old Moya, claiming the only break point of the match to take the opening set as both players served solidly throughout.
The number eight seed looked like he was going to level the contest in the second set when he took a 2-0 lead in the tie-break, only for Chela to win seven straight points and lift the trophy for the second time to banish memories of last year's final defeat to Luis Horna.
"Finally, I've won in Acapulco," Chela said shortly after his triumph.
"This victory is very important for me, I haven't won anything for a long time. I believe I had champion's luck.
"Luckily, I played my best tennis, I served well, was focused and was very solid.
He added: This is without doubt a special tournament for me, I won it in 2000 (in Mexico City) and was able to break into the world's top 100 players for the first time."
