Nicolas Almagro put the finishing touches on the best week of his tennis career on Sunday by winning his first ATP Tour title in Valencia.
The 20-year-old Spaniard beat another surprise finalist in Gilles Simon of France, 6-2 6-3, in the final of the Open de Tenis Comunidad Valenciana.
Almagro, whose five wins and four defeats this season before the Valencia event had earned him a world ranking of 77, upset former US and Australian Open champion Marat Safin of Russia in the semi-finals on Saturday.
