Seventh-seeded Igor Andreev rallied for a 5-7 7-6 (7-3) 6-2
victory over number six seed Nicolas Kiefer of Germany in the Kremlin Cup.
Going down a set and 4-0 in the second, Andreev stormed back to capture his
third title of the year.
Kiefer, who was appearing in his first final since Indianapolis last year, has
lost his last eight championship matches since winning the title at Hong Kong in
2000.
"I cannot believe it, it has always been my dream to win the Kremlin Cup, my
home tournament, in front of the Russian people," Andreev said.
"I was a ball boy at this tournament a few years ago and now I am here with
the trophy!"
Asked about his comeback, Andreev added: "It was a lot of luck, and maybe he believed a little bit too early in his
victory.
"The crowd was supporting me, win or lose, and finally I could turn around
the match. After the second set, I felt more confident in myself that I could
win this match."
Kiefer commented: "This is very tough to digest, but Igor played very well when he was down and
fully deserved to win.
"If they had told me a week ago I would
reach the final in Moscow I would have been happy. There are many things I can
still improve, so I am hopeful for the future."
