Fourth-seeded Croatian Ivan Ljubicic won his second
straight event and third career title with a 6-2 6-4 7-6 (7/5) triumph over
seventh seed Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain in the final of the BA-CA Tennis
Trophy on Sunday.
Ljubicic had lost his first four finals of the year before winning in Metz
last week. The 26-year-old has won his last 12 matches, also notching a pair of
victories to help Croatia defeat Russia in the Davis Cup semi-finals last
month.
On Sunday, Ljubicic fired 21 aces, including four in the third-set tie-break.
Ljubicic, who did not lose a set at the indoor hardcourt tournament, held serve
in all 57 of his service games this week, becoming just the third player this
year to win a title without losing serve.
"It's a fantastic feeling," Ljubicic said. "I had some unbelievable
results this week. I didn't drop serve all week and I saved all (17) break
points I faced, it's incredible. I was a little bit worried about my fitness in
the final but fortunately I managed to win in three sets."
"I played well but I think I didn't take the chances I had on his serve,
which was the key to the match," Ferrero said. "He was serving so well."
Ferrero, who slipped to 11-13 in career finals, was aiming for his first title
since the ATP Masters Series Madrid in 2003.
Since then, he is 0-3 in finals, also losing in Rotterdam last year and in
Barcelona earlier this year.
The 2003 French Open champion, Ferrero had dispatched top seed David
Nalbandian of Argentina and third-seeded Czech Radek Stepanek en route to the
final.
"I had a great week, I didn't play bad today but I just couldn't take my
chances," Ferrero said. "I'm confident and I expect to have some good results in the rest of this year's tournaments."
