After being forced to win two matches on Saturday,
the sixth-seeded Filippo Volandri did not have enough to beat Russia's Igor
Andreev in the final of the Campionati Internazionali Di Sicilia tennis
tournament on Sunday.
Volandri dominated the first set 6-0 to the delight of the home crowd, but
Andreev bounced back to win the next two 6-1 6-3.
It marked the second straight year that Volandri had lost in the final.
Last year, he was beaten in straight sets by Tomas Berdych of the Czech
Republic.
"I will win here one day, I promise," Volandri said. "I am really
disappointed because I wanted to win my first ATP title in Italy."
The unseeded Andreev earned his second career title, winning his first in
Valencia in April.
Volandri, who was dropped from Italy's Davis Cup team, was forced into double
duty on Saturday. He beat second-seeded Tommy Robredo in a quarter-final match
that was postponed on Friday due to rain and then followed that with a win over
Tomas Behrend of Germany in the semis.
On Sunday, Volandri won the first set in 16 minutes, dropping only eight
points. But Andreev broke Volandri's serve in the first game and third game of
the second set and raced to a 4-0 lead.
"I wasn't prepared in the first set," Andreev said. "I could not warm up
properly. When I broke him in the first game of the second set, the match
turned around. That was the key."
Andreev lost his serve after taking a 4-1 lead in the third set, but broke
back to seal the title.
"He (Andreev) really impressed me in the last two sets," Volandri said.
"He got everything back."
