Rafael Nadal may have stretched his winning streak on
clay to 29 matches by winning the Synsam Swedish Open, but he still feels he is
short of his best form.
The world number three beat Czech Tomas Berdych 2-6 6-2 6-4 in Sunday's final for his
seventh claycourt title of the year.
"It was a good match where Tomas played unbelievably in the first set and
probably I was more lucky in the second and third - that could have been the
key," said the 19-year-old.
"I am not playing my best tennis but at least I am winning so that's good.
"I hope I can continue improving since I have too many up and downs.
"I am playing Stuttgart and Umag next," added the Spanish youngster.
"Every tournament I play is very important to me. Then I'll play Montreal and
Cincy (Cincinnati) which are also important."
Berdych, who was appearing in his first final of 2005 and looking to claim his
second career title, accepted he was beaten by the better man on the day before
laying down a challenge to the French Open champion.
"I want to congratulate Rafael for a great match," said the 20-year-old. "I
think he had more luck than me today and he deserved to win.
"Still I am happy and I hope I can play him soon on a hard court.
"I had a great week here in Bastad and I hope I can make it here again next
year. It is a great event."
Nadal, beaten in the second round by eventual runner-up Gaston Gaudio in last
year's event, even believes Bastad is one of the most enjoyable tournaments on the
ATP Tour.
"I want to give a special thanks to both tournament directors here in
Bastad," he said.
"They really make a special event here, and it is probably the most fun
tournament of the whole year.
"It is great to play here in Bastad where everyone is so kind and nice with
all the players."
