David Nalbandian completed a dominant week-long
performance by defeating Romania's Andrei Pavel 6-4 6-1 in the final of the BMW
Open on Sunday.
This tournament was the first for the Argentine since he was knocked out in
the second round of the Nasdaq-100 in Miami in late March. His best previous
finish this season was the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.
The top seed in this clay court event, the 23-year-old Nalbandian lost just
one set in five matches in posting his third ATP title and first since Basle in
2002.
He also improved to 3-10 all-time in finals appearances.
After dropping the second set of his first match against Ecuador's Nicolas
Lapentti, Nalbandian lost just 20 games thereafter.
In the semi-final against Finland's Jarkko Nieminen, he won the last seven
games of the match, letting Nieminen win only 11 points in the second set.
The 31-year-old Pavel, who advanced to his second BMW final after dispatching
local hero Tommy Haas on Saturday, was playing in his first final since 2003.
