Teenage Spaniard Rafael Nadal defeated countryman
Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-1 7-6 (7/4) 6-3 to capture the Open Seat Godo event in
Barcelona on Sunday afternoon.
Nadal, who won his fourth tournament of the season and second in a row after
success in Monte Carlo last week, improved to an ATP tour-best 25-2 on clay this
season and 35-6 overall.
After managing just 30 wins last season, Nadal is expected to enter the top-10
ranked players in the world this week.
After winning in Brazil and Acapulco in mid-February, Nadal narrowly missed a
third straight title when he lost to top-ranked Roger Federer of Switzerland
after winning the first two sets in the final in Miami.
In the first all-Spanish final here since 2001, Nadal breezed through the
first set, rallied from two games down in the second and finished off Ferrero in
the third.
The left-hander, who dropped just one set last week in the Principality in a
tie-breaker, did not lose a set here and beat a fellow Spaniard for the 13th
consecutive time.
Ferrero, the 2001 champion who was competing in his first final since February
2004, lost to Nadal 6-2 6-1 in Valencia last month.
