It took 128 tournaments but Australian veteran
Wayne Arthurs finally secured his first career ATP Tour singles title on
Sunday.
The big-serving 33-year-old left-hander dispatched Mario Ancic of Croatia 7-5
6-3 in the final of the Tennis Channel Open in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The third-seeded Ancic cruised past second seed and defending champion Vincent
Spadea of the United States 6-1 6-4 on Saturday night but was unable to break
through for his first tour victory.
To advance to his second career ATP singles final, Arthurs defeated Christophe
Rochus 7-5 7-6 (7/2) in the semi-finals.
Arthurs was playing in his first final since Nottingham in 2002 and picked up
a first prize cheque for £27,000.
