Kenneth
Carlsen claimed the third ATP Tour title of his career with a 7-5 7-5 triumph over Max Mirnyi
of Belarus in the final of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis.
The unseeded Dane, who advanced reached the final when top seed Andy Roddick
withdrew from the tournament with an ankle injury, last won in Tokyo in 2002.
The match was 5-5 in the opening set when Carlsen converted his second break
point of the game by attacking the net and hitting a backhand volley winner.
He went on to close the set winning the next four consecutive points,
including an ace on set point.
And it was 5-5 in the second set when Carlsen again broke Mirnyi.
Serving for the match, the Dane saved one break point at 30-40 and converted
his first match point to win the title.
"This one and Tokyo is something special," Carlsen said. "When you win a
tournament is always something special. It's amazing.
"That's what you worked for. It makes everything worthwhile."
A sprained left ankle forced Roddick to withdraw and Carlsen was much fresher
than the eighth-seeded Mirnyi, who had long matches all week and also competed
in the doubles portion of the tournament.
"It was a competitive match," Mirnyi said. "I felt like I certainly had my
chances. He played good enough sometimes, sometimes I was not good enough to take
him but that is the way it goes. He came away with the win and certainly
deserves it."
