Top seed Andy Roddick handed Frenchman Cyril
Saulnier a dose of reality in the SAP Open final.
On court for less than an hour, Roddick defeated Saulnier 6-0 6-4 on Sunday to
capture his second straight title in San Jose and a 16th career ATP Tour victory.
It was the first win of the year for the 22-year-old American, who was coming
off a disappointing loss to Australia's Lleyton Hewitt in the semi-finals of the
Australian Open.
"The first set was really good on my part," said Roddick, who took home
US$52,000 for the victory.
"I was feeling really confident, compared to earlier in the week when I came
in struggling."
Roddick, who is third in the ATP rankings, defeated fellow American Mardy Fish
in the final here last year, when the tournament was known as the Siebel Open.
Australia's Mark Philippoussis was the last back-to-back winner of the
tournament in 1999 and 2000.
Roddick needed just 50 minutes to improve to 3-0 lifetime against Saulnier,
who upset seventh-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria to reach his first ATP Tour
final.
Saulnier won just 11 points in the first set before a more competitive showing
in the second.
"He just played much better," said Saulnier, who won only 12 of 46 return
points on his serve.
"He didn't give me any points."
Saulnier broke in the sixth game of the second set to cut Roddick's lead to
4-2, but Roddick held twice to close out the match.
"It's a great springboard," Roddick said.
"My transition on the court was great and I was able to step it up on my
returns."
