Argentina's Gaston Gaudio continues to make
his mark on clay.
Gaudio claimed his fifth career title and second in as many weeks on Sunday,
defeating fellow Argentine Mariano Puerta 6-4 6-4 in the final of the ATP Buenos
Aires tournament.
In his sixth consecutive final on clay, Gaudio needed 92 minutes to win the
first all-Argentine final in Buenos Aires since 1982, when Guillermo Vilas
defeated Alejandro Arenzabal to win the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis title.
"This is my other dream come true. After the win in Roland Garros to win here
at home, the place I love the most is just great," Gaudio said.
"It was not a great match but I held on well and managed to win at the
end."
The current French Open champion and second seed here, Gaudio has won 31 of
his last 34 matches on clay. He captured the BellSouth Open title last week.
Gaudio broke Puerta at 4-4 in the second and then held to pick up the win.
"I have to congratulate Gaston. It is impossible for him to miss a ball,"
Puerta said.
"I hope I can play here again and win this title that all Argentinians want
so badly."
The unseeded Puerta, who upset top seed Carlos Moya of Spain in the
quarter-finals, was seeking his third career title and appeared in his first
final since Umag in 2000.
