Paula Radcliffe may not like marathons in
Athens, but Nicolas Massu of Chile certainly does.
While world record holder Radcliffe was toiling on the road from Marathon to
central Athens, over at the tennis centre there was another incredible five-set
victory for Massu.
He and Fernando Gonzalez had won the men's doubles final just before 3am on
Sunday morning, beating Germans Rainer Schuttler and Nicolas Kiefer in a
four-hour classic.
And Massu captured his second gold in 24 hours by beating American Mardy Fish
6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3 6-4 in the singles final.
At two sets to one down, Massu looked to be feeling the effects of his
late-night exploits, before picking up his game to sink Fish.
Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium won the women's title on Saturday, beating
France's Amelie Mauresmo 6-3 6-3.
