Andre Agassi proved that he is still capable
of defeating the best players in the world as he claimed the Masters Series
event in Cincinnati with a three-set win over Lleyton Hewitt.
Agassi, seeded 11th, was not even expected to be in the final, but his
thrilling semi-final triumph against compatriot Andy Roddick earned him a
match-up with Hewitt.
The 10th-seeded Australian was the favourite going into the match, but it was
Agassi who started the brighter and he took the first set 6-3.
Hewitt, though, seems to be recapturing the form that saw him become world
number one in 2002, and he hit back in the second set, winning it 6-2 to level
the match.
But Agassi raised his game in the decider, hitting sweet groundstrokes to
complete a 6-3 2-6 6-2 win - and establish himself amongst the favourites for
the US Open later this month.
