Dutchman Martin Verkerk delighted the home crowd
by scooping his second career ATP title in Amersfoort on Sunday.
The number four seed toppled second-seeded Fernando Gonzalez 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 6-4
to become only the second Dutchman to win the Priority Telecom Open.
After clinching the first set on a tie-break, the 25-year-old from Leiderdorp
found himself pegged back when he lost his serve at 5-4 in the second.
But Verkerk, who hit 12 aces in the match, broke Gonzalez's serve early in the
third set and never looked like relinquishing the advantage, serving out in two
hours and 18 minutes to claim his first ATP crown on home soil.
He said: "It feels very good to win in your home country, it's something
special. Any title is special but it's even better winning at home.
"My coach has helped me a lot and without him I couldn't have done this. I
also want to congratulate Fernando on his week here. I'm really jealous of his
forehand, I'm going to watch his next matches and try and copy it."
Gonzalez was gracious in defeat and admitted Verkerk was deserving of his
victory.
The Chilean said: "Well that's tennis, it's always best when you win. Martin
was the best player all week and he deserves this title.
"He played really good and even though I played a good match, it wasn't good
enough."
