Fernando Verdasco won his first career ATP title on
Sunday with a 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 victory over fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes in the
final of the Valencia Open.
Verdasco battled fierce winds to triumph in his second career final. He lost
his first championship match to compatriot Carlos Moya at the Mexican Open in
Acapulco in March.
"It was a difficult match due to the weather conditions," Verdasco said.
"There was a lot of wind on the court. He started playing very well as well,
but the wind was definitely a difficult factor. I was able to take advantage of
the first set point I had in the tie-break and it gave me a lot of confidence to
win the second and win the match."
The 20-year-old Madrid resident had ousted top seed and defending champion
Juan Carlos Ferrero in the semi-finals and Verdasco did not lose a set during
the tournament.
"I played two finals in two months, so I'm very happy," the left-hander
said. "The first one in Acapulco gave me experience and helped me win today."
Playing in his first final in three years, Montanes was also looking for his
first title.
He had a tougher time reaching Sunday's match, needing three sets to beat
qualifier Marc Lopez in the quarter-finals and sixth seed Alberto Martin in the
semi-finals.
"It was a very difficult match due to the wind," Montanes said.
"It was very, very tough. I think I did my best out there though. I had my
chances in the first set but couldn't take advantage of them. Even if I lost, I
am very happy with this result."
