Eighth seeded American Taylor Dent
upset world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero with a straight-sets victory in the
final of the Thailand Open.
The 22-year-old Dent took just an hour and 40 minutes to complete a 6-3 7-6
(7-5) win to claim his second title of the season after Memphis in February.
Dent denied the Spaniard his fourth title of the year and maintained his own
100 per cent career-record in finals (3-0).
Dent went into the match on the back of a straight sets semi-final win over
Finland's Jarkko Nieminen.
But the 10,000 crowd were firmly behind 23-year-old Ferrero after local
favourite Paradorn Srichaphan fell at the quarter final stage.
Ferrero reached the final after disposing of Croatian number six seed Ivan
Ljubicic in straight sets.
Dent broke midway through the first set and again in the opening game of the
second.
Ferrero recovered but the comeback was short-lived and the young American
remained focused to see out the tie-break.
