The rain went away long enough on Monday at
the Romanian Open to allow fourth-seeded David Sanchez to cruise past second
seed Nicolas Massu in the final of the US$422,000 claycourt event on Monday.
After yet another short rain delay, Sanchez of Spain breezed to a 6-2 6-2
victory over Argentinian Massu to capture his second career ATP title.
The Spaniard captured the Vina del Mar crown in February.
This match was to be played Sunday but was rained out.
One quarter-final match and both semi-finals, which were held over from
Saturday's postponement, were completed on Sunday but showers prevented the
final from being played.
The extra day may have been beneficial for Sanchez who had a two hour, 42
minute struggle with Jose Acasuso of Argentina in the semi-finals, 6-7 (4-7) 7-6
(8-6) 6-3.
"It's a little bit strange to win this title," Sanchez said.
"I played two tough matches in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. Yesterday
I played my friend Acasuso and I was a little bit lucky to save four match
points. But it shows when you fight you always have a chance."
Massu eased his way into the final with a 6-1 6-4 triumph over Razvan Sabau of
Romania in 82 minutes.
The Argentinian's win denied the host nation of a Romanian finalist for the
first time in Bucharest.
"It was difficult for me to play on this court after all the rain," Massu
said.
"The court was heavy, I couldn't move the ball. It was a very difficult
week."
With the championship, Sanchez earns approximately 58,600 dollars in first
prize money as well as 35 points in the ATP Champions Race.
He also evened up his record with Massu at 2-2.
