Guillermo Coria's magnificent week came to an apt
conclusion when he sped away with the Mercedes Cup title.
Coria, the second seed, crushed number nine Tommy Robredo of Spain 6-2 6-2 6-1
in one hour and 40 minutes in Sunday's final for his fourth straight rout this
week at the £400,000 claycourt event.
The 21-year-old Argentinian lost just 11 games in four matches after getting
past talented young Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, 7-5 6-3, in the first round.
His run to his second title of the year and third of his career included a 6-0
6-0 thrashing of defending champion Mikhail Youzhny in the quarter-finals.
He did not drop a set this week.
"Today was a hard match and Tommy fought back enormously well, but everything
simply went well for me again," beamed the winner, who also won the Hamburg
Masters Series event in May.
Coria not only won the first prize of £80,000, but received a brand new
Mercedes-Benz CLK 240 convertible.
He thanked the fans and his coach Alberto Mancini for their support, but plans
to keep the car for himself.
"He helped me a great deal, and for that I thank him. Perhaps I will let him
ride with me sometime," said Coria.
"I hope I manage to win a few other great cars and then I will certainly make
him a present of one."
Coria has emerged as one of the best claycourt players on the ATP tour.
He has won 16 of his last 17 matches on the dirt and is 28-5 on the surface
this year.
This year, Coria reached the final at the Monte Carlo Masters and appeared in
his first career grand slam semi-final on the red clay of Roland Garros.
The 21-year-old Robredo failed to claim his second career title, but
understood he was facing a superior opponent.
"It was a good week for me, but it is naturally hard to lose the final,
especially if one has been so close to winning this car," said the French Open
quarter-finalist.
"He has had a great year and simply played better today. I congratulate him
heartily. He deserved to win."
