Andy Roddick sent out a warning to the rest of the
French Open field on Saturday by hammering Nikolay Davydenko in the final of the
Internationaler Raiffeisen Grand Prix in Austria.
Roddick, whose previous title win was in Houston last year, beat the Russian
Davis Cup player 6-3 6-2.
"It's been more than a year, this feels great," said Roddick. "It was
important to take the initiative from the beginning and control the tempo in
each point. I was just trying to play good consistent tennis."
Roddick jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and then held serve the rest of the way
to win the first set, losing only five points on his serve.
He played consistent tennis from the backcourt, mixing up the pace during
groundstroke rallies and throwing in a few serve-and-volley points on his
serve.
Roddick then went up two breaks in the second and when Davydenko broke back
for 4-2 the 20-year-old American quickly stopped the Russian from gaining any
momentum by going up 5-2.
"I'm really happy to win this event. It was great to get alot of matches here
- and a lot of wins - in preparation for the French Open," he said.
"Match toughness is a lot different than training. "I'm in great form right
now, without question and I'm really happy to have my first win in Europe."
Roddick now owns six career ATP titles.
