Top seed Carlos Moya upset the locals by
defeating Argentinian youngster Guillermo Coria in the final of the Copa AT&T
claycourt event in Buenos Aires on Sunday.
Moya's victory keeps up his impressive unbeaten record in the South American
capital where he won his first ATP title back in 1995 when he was just 19.
The Spaniard had to battle hard though before beating Coria over three sets,
winning 6-3 4-6 6-4.
"It was a tough match, Coria played really well," the 1998 French Open
winner said.
"I had the match under control until half way through the second set. But
then I lost concentration, and the third could have been anybody's," he added.
"Luckily I served well, and I guess the experience played its part too.
"It's an honour for me to win here. There are very few weeks in the circuit
when I don't miss my home, and this certainly is one of those."
Coria, 21, was delighted with his showing at the tournament.
"It was an incredible week. I'm really happy despite the defeat," he said.
"I was very close, but he's the world number four, and he was very solid in
the decisive points."
This was the 12th career singles title for Moya and the first of 2003. Next
week the Spaniard will defend his 2002 title in Acapulco, Mexico.
